Chapter Four
Feeling more alive, so much less ambivalent than he had over the past few years, Leyton watched Anna stroll away on Birkenhead’s arm, and attended Lady Walpole and her pasty-faced daughter, Georgina, before him. He would speak to her father tonight, unable, he was sure, to watch her being led away from him by another man for very long.
These last few hours, he’d experienced more emotions that he had in all his years in the army. At first, after he’d kissed her, he’d been plagued with an instant regret, that he had in fact just kissed Noah’s little sister. Guilt, that rogues such as he were rarely inclined to suffer, had surged within him, at this great mistake. What had he been thinking! And then, as the picnic luncheon had carried on, as Anna Beverley had favored him so often with shy little glances and warm and secretive smiles, he realized it had been no mistake. He’d always enjoyed the company of Anna, even as they’d grown up and her own brother did not. Coming home to find her so wonderfully grown up, being so intrigued by everything about her suggested the affection was beyond friendly. The kiss, his and her response to it, reinforced the idea that there must be something more. And when he examined everything he’d felt in her presence and not—jealousy in regards to other hopeful suitors, protectiveness toward her, his inability to not stare at her lips, being so entertained by her sunny personality, and damn, having not been so seduced by a kiss ever as he had by Anna’s—he knew that what he felt was no passing fancy.
He’d never given much thought to love and marriage. Sure, he had assumed he’d marry one day, find some respectable woman able to give him sons and maybe some affection. Not with any one of his many previous dalliances had he ever thought of longevity or permanence. Yet, it was the first thing he’d thought of once he’d understood the kiss was no blunder. He’d thought of forever, and realized that the familiarity of Anna, of her in his arms, of being there always, gave him a sense of peace and warmth and happiness.
Lady Walpole must have sensed his inattention, as she raised her voice several octaves after a while. “And my Katherine—well you can plainly see how wonderfully refined and elegant she is—was only just saying to me that—”
“Lord March,” came a call from behind Leyton, which effectively silenced the effusive lady. Leyton turned to find Noah, himself.
Noah smirked at him, seeming not entirely pleased to see him. He clasped his hand very tightly on Leyton’s shoulder. “A word, if you please.” And without waiting Leyton’s response, Noah said to the ladies, “If you will excuse us?”
The hand at Leyton’s shoulder steered him away from the ballroom. If it had been anyone else, Leyton would have shook him off and given him a piece of his mind, but this was Noah, and Leyton guessed that his crossness just now meant that he had seen Leyton and Anna dancing.
